The quick comparison

Bus fares and timings vary by operator and season; taxi prices are per vehicle, not per person. Our taxi figures are sample prices from our current rate formula, not confirmed offers.

When the bus makes more sense

If you're travelling alone or as a couple with light bags, an overnight Volvo is hard to beat on cost, and you save a night's hotel. HRTC and private operators run multiple services each evening, and many are comfortable. The downsides are a night of broken sleep on hill roads, a fixed drop point in Manali, and no stops of your choosing.

When a private taxi makes more sense

Split across four adults, a taxi often costs about the same per person as premium bus seats, and it collects you from your door, stops for meals when you want, and drops you at your hotel. Families with children or older relatives usually find the daytime drive far easier than a night bus. You also see the Beas valley in daylight, which is half the point of the trip.

Doing the maths for your group

Because a taxi is priced per vehicle and a bus per seat, group size decides which is cheaper. With our sample Innova fare of about ₹10,250, four adults pay roughly ₹2,560 each, and six pay about ₹1,700 each, close to or below premium bus seats, with door-to-door pickup included. For two people, the bus is usually far cheaper.

Remember the hidden costs on both sides: an autorickshaw to the Delhi bus stand and a taxi from the Manali bus stand to your hotel add up for bus travellers. With a taxi, a night in Delhi or Chandigarh to split the drive adds a hotel, but you arrive rested.

The mix that works for many travellers

A popular middle path is the overnight bus up, then a local taxi for sightseeing days and the return. Another is to break the drive: a taxi to Chandigarh or Shimla on day one, then on to Manali the next day. Both cut the 12-hour single day that makes the full drive tiring.
