Getting there
Transport to Manali is often the biggest single cost for families, and the smallest for solo travellers on a bus.
- Overnight bus from Delhi: the cheapest option. Fares depend on bus type and season, from ordinary buses to HRTC and private Volvos; check the operator's site for the current price.
- Private taxi from Delhi (about 540 km): priced per vehicle, not per person, so it gets cheaper per head as the group grows. Our Delhi to Manali page shows current fares by vehicle, including fuel, driver, tolls and Himachal entry tax.
- From Chandigarh (about 305 km): a shorter, cheaper taxi leg. Many people take the train to Chandigarh and a taxi from there.
- Flights to Bhuntar: limited and often expensive, with weather cancellations. Flying to Chandigarh and driving is usually better value.
Where you stay
Hotel prices in Manali depend more on the season than on anything else. Rates in late May, June, the Christmas–New Year week and snow weekends can be double or more those in March, July or November. Rough ranges per room per night in normal season:
| Type | Indicative price per night |
|---|---|
| Hostel dorm bed | About ₹400–900 |
| Budget guesthouse or homestay | About ₹1,000–2,500 |
| Mid-range hotel | About ₹3,000–6,000 |
| Upscale hotel or resort | About ₹8,000 and above |
Local sightseeing
Local taxi union rates set the price of day trips from Manali, and they're fixed per vehicle for each standard trip. Solang is a half day; Solang with the Atal Tunnel and Sissu is a full day; Rohtang is a full day with permit fees added. Our Manali taxi service page and the Manali to Solang, Sissu and Rohtang route pages list current fares for each.
Add the fixed charges: the Rohtang permit (₹500 per car on the official portal) and congestion charge (₹50), and the barrier tax for Lahaul at Sissu, which the operator pays and passes on.
Food, activities and extras
- Food: dhabas and simple cafés are cheap; Old Manali cafés and hotel restaurants cost more. Budget roughly ₹600–1,500 per person per day depending on where you eat.
- Snow gear rental: a few hundred rupees per person for a suit and boots.
- Solang ropeway: roughly ₹500–750 per person (published estimates).
- Paragliding: roughly ₹1,000 for a short flight to ₹3,000–4,000 for a longer one, depending on the operator.

- Shopping: Kullu shawls, woollens and dry fruit are the usual buys.
Sample budgets
These are rough totals for illustration only, excluding shopping, and assuming normal season rather than peak weeks.
A budget couple for 4 days by overnight bus, staying in a guesthouse and taking one shared or half-day taxi trip, might spend roughly ₹15,000–25,000 in total. A family of four for 5 days with a private taxi from Delhi, a mid-range hotel and two sightseeing days might spend roughly ₹60,000–1,00,000. A comfortable trip with an upscale hotel and a car for every day costs more again.

Ways to save
- Avoid the peak weeks: late May to June, Christmas to New Year and long weekends.
- Travel with a group: a taxi is priced per vehicle, so four people pay a quarter each.
- Combine sights that share a road: Solang, the Atal Tunnel and Sissu in one day.
- Stay a little out of town, in Vashisht, Old Manali or Naggar, for better value and quieter nights.
- Book the taxi for the whole trip, rather than separate transfers and local cabs, if you're also visiting Shimla, Kasol or Dharamshala.
