Overview
Pangi is the most remote valley in Himachal, tucked between the Pir Panjal and Zanskar ranges along the deep gorge of the Chenab. It's reached over Sach Pass, at about 4,400 m, by one of the roughest roads in the state, open only for a few summer months. This seven-day road trip crosses from Chamba over the pass to Killar, spends two nights in Pangi, then follows the Chenab east to Udaipur and Keylong in Lahaul before returning through the Atal Tunnel to Manali and Chandigarh. It's an adventure, not a holiday, and it rewards those who go.

Himachal's most remote valley
Pangi is part of Chamba district but cut off from the rest of it for much of the year. Until roads were built, it was reached only on foot over high passes. Its villages grow barley, buckwheat and potatoes on steep terraces above the Chenab, and the valley's festivals and dress are distinct from the rest of Himachal.
The roads
The Sach Pass road from Bairagarh to Killar and the Chenab road from Killar to Udaipur are among the most challenging in Himachal, with long unpaved stretches, waterfalls across the road and sheer drops. They're spectacular, but they demand patience and a good driver.
Who this suits
This trip is for confident travellers who enjoy long road days, simple stays and real remoteness. It isn't suitable for young children, anyone prone to motion sickness or anyone with a fear of heights.
